100 Women of Substance
100 Women of Substance is scheme to recognise 100 women in Nottingham that have been an inspiration to others in the city
They could have overcome professional or personal barriers; fought for the rights of others; worked selflessly to improve the lives of others or made a lasting impact on Nottingham.
The 100 women received certificates at an event at the Council House on Tuesday 8th March and were invited to a celebration at Nottingham Castle on Friday 11th March. Some of the women’s photos were made into a commemorative poster by Platform 51:

Amy Smith: Community activist in Sneinton and Nottingham City Council officer.
Angela Kandola: Executive Director of AWAAZ, Asian Mental Health Resource Unit.
Ann Bremner: Manager of the Friary Drop in, supporting those with financial or housing crises.
Anne Darby: Founder of the Jane Beech Trust and trustee of Nottinghamshire Deaf Society
Barbara Brooks-Thomas: Social worker and vocalist.
Beata Polanowska: Project Coordinator, Signpost to Polish Success and editor of the East Midlands Polish Newspaper.
Bernie Groves: Head Teacher, Big Wood School.
Betty Higgins: Ex leader of Nottingham City Council and instrumental in encouraging women to stand for election.
Brenda Tezoo: Chairperson of the Mauritian Community Group.
Carol Crowe: Community artist, film maker and mentor of the arts.
Caroline Roe: Founder of Harmless, an organisation which supports self-harmers.
Chantelle Gray: Runs Nottingham’s LGBT Youth project, Outburst, and also a full-time foster parent.
Chelsea Cameron: Probation officer for 30 years working in the community with ex-offenders and many other disadvantaged groups.
Cheryl Archer: Education tutor at Nottinghamshire Probation Trust.
Chris Cutland: Executive Director of Women’s Aid Integrated Services.
Claire Siddel Daniels: School teacher at Whitemoor and founder of NG8 band.
Clare Ashton: Community activist in Clifton & Wilford.
Dawn Edwards: Managing Director of Challenge Consulting and Lambley Day Nursery Ltd.
Dawn Good: Head of Stroke Service at Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust and Chairperson of National UK Stroke forum
Di Clausen: Secretary of Arkwright Meadows Community Gardens and involved in many other local projects.
Dinah Minton: Co-founder of the national Headway charity, based in Nottingham.
Dorothy Gee MBE: One of the founder members of Bartra Tenants and Residents Association
Dorothy Holmes: Nottingham City Council officer and supporter of local communities for over 20 years.
Elizabeth Hutchinson: Recently retired Chair of Framework and its predecessor Macedon, and involved in many other local projects
Emma Dewinton: Nottingham City Councillor. Worker in the first domestic violence women’s refuge in Nottingham.
Esme Knight: Pagan spiritual leader and founder of Pagan Pride, the first event of its kind in the UK outside of London.
Fiona Thornewill: First British female to walk to South Pole and North Pole and fastest person to walk solo to the South Pole.
Floe Shakespeare: Community activist, member of the Inter Faith Council, Women’s History Group and others.
Frances Connor: Founder of Nottinghamshire Sign Language Interpreting Service (NSLIS), one of the first BSL interpreting services.
Frances Dennett: Honory Alderman since 1991 and volunteer collator of Nottingham’s civic history.
Gabrielle O’Brien: Volunteer on the psychiatric ward at Queens Medical Centre and campaigner for human rights
Gill Lewis: HMP Nottingham Prison Librarian, encouraging prisoners who have disengaged from their families and learning
Giusi Sorrentino: Holistic practitioner who uses her talents to support the community free of charge.
Hannah Harris: Founder member of SHE – a charity working with adult survivors of childhood sexual abuse.
Hilary Antoinette Silvester: Chair of Nottingham Civic Society and Chair of Binns Organ Trust.
Hyacinth Francis: Chair of Hya Level and Mothers against Crime, supporting positive activities for local young people.
Iris Yu: Chairperson of Nottingham Chinese Community Association. Coordinated the building of a school in China.
Jacqueline McKenzie Johnson: Chair of Safe as Houses, treasurer of Heathfield Association, ex-foster carer, and social worker.
Jane Geraghty: Chief Exececutive of Nottingham Probation Trust.
Jane Jeoffrey: Chair of Arkwright Meadows Community Gardens and involved in other local and national community projects.

Dr Janet Folkes : World-breaking gas balloon pilot, from Nottingham University’s Department of Mechanical, Materials and Manufacturing Engineering.
Jasmin Vassell: Overcame personal and educational barriers to set up her own business, Dynamic Hair Studios.
Jennifer Spencer: Chief Executive of Experience Nottinghamshire and fundraiser for Maggie’s Cancer Centre.
Jenny Leggott: Deputy Chief Executive and Director of Nursing at Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust.
Jill Westby: Campaigner and long-time supporter of St Ann’s Allotments.
Jo Bradley: Executive Director of Groundwork Greater Nottingham.
Jo Cox-Brown: Director of Malt Cross and head of the Street Pastors service in Nottingham.
Joy Nugent: Founder of Independent St Carnival Group which she runs from her home.
Judy Naake: Former controlling director at St Tropez and chair of Maggies Cancer Centre charity.
Julia Hodson: Nottinghamshire’s first woman Chief Constable.
Julie Huby: Supports students on the ‘Balls to Poverty’ project.
Karen Medd: Mental health campaigner and spearheaded the campaign to save the Beeston Day Centre
Kate Baxter: Founder of a charitable trust taking arts-based therapies to institutions in Romania.
Kate Davies: Assistant director for equality, diversity and human rights at NHS Nottinghamshire.
Kate Meynell: Chief Inspector, Nottinghamshire Police and volunteer Crisis Intervention Negotiator (hostage negotiator)
Kate Shaw: Fundraiser for many local charities and overcame severe back pain to run a half marathon.
Kerry Quigley: Community organiser, tenants and residents leader and youth worker.
Lianne Taylor: City Council worker for 32 years, rising from an administrator to director
Lilian Greenwood: Nottingham’s first female MP for Nottingham South.
Linda Granville: Linda is a church related community worker in Hyson Green who overcame personal hardship to help others
Linda Redmond: Set up rehabilitation programmes for older people under the delayed discharged regulations.
Lisa Dawkins: Director of football at Nottingham Forest Ladies and champion of women’s football
Lisa Jepson: Director of Willbond Bathroom Centres who joined the company in 1985 as a receptionist.
Lisa Warnock: Deaf campaigner for over 20 years, campaigning for deaf people’s right of access to health and community services.
Liz Cardwell: Teacher, former magistrate and Chair of the Youth Bench and member of the Lord Chancellor’s Advisory Committee
Mairin Casey: HM Coroner, ranked as ‘Leading Family Junior’ in 2005 and 2006, and fundraiser for breast cancer charities.
Margaret Humphreys: Social worker, author and whistleblower. Investigated the British Government programme on Home Children.
Margaret McLoughlin: Active volunteer and member of various groups including the Aspley/Bells Lane Partnership.
Marion MacPherson: Consultant obstetrician and gynaecologist at Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust for over 20 years.
Martine Hamilton-Knight: Successful architectural photographer whose images are published worldwide.
Mary Lower: President and founder of National Association of Child Contact Centres.
Mary Say: Youth worker for over 20 years and magistrate. Also one of the first women to organise and run a football team.
Moby Farrands: Community worker for over 30 years in Radford and Hyson Green.
Monica Stoppleman: Raised funds to build a centre for indigenous women in the rural community of Choritotora, near La Paz in Bolivia.
Natasha Johnson-Richards: Founder and Director of Partnership and E-learning at Digit All.
Parveen Mirza MBE: Founder member and Chief Executive of Asian Women’s Project.
Pat Marshall: One of the longest serving teachers in Nottingham, spending 23 years as a Head Teacher in inner city schools.
Professor Penny Standen: Head of Community Health Sciences and Professor of Health Psychology & Learning, University of Nottingham
Rebecca Scott: Rebecca is a senior manager at PWC and also a chair of Nottingham Young Enterprise Area Board
Rita Broughton: Clifton campaigner and instrumental in improving her local park at Breckswood
Rosemary Renouf MBE: Chair of the Nottingham Mental Health Awareness Weeks. Received an MBE for Mental Health Services in 2002.
Rosey Cox: Rosey is Chair of Nottingham Pride and brought the first LGBT march to Nottingham.
Samantha Morton: Formerly in care, now a successful film director and a positive role model for many.
Sarah Benedek: Director and board member of Framework and Chairperson of the Chartered Institute of Marketing.
Sharon S: Overcame dyslexia and back pain to complete courses in photography, barbering and physiotherapy.
Shirley Anne Share: Set up Noelle House, a hostel for homeless women.
Shuguftah Quddoos: Equality and diversity trainer for Embrace Equality.
Stania Hughes: Special educational needs teacher, working with some of Nottingham’s most profoundly disabled children.
Stephanie Sirr: Chief Executive of Nottingham Playhouse.
Sue Johnson: A former prostitute that went on to co-found POW. Also a Nottingham City Councillor.
Sultana Syed: Founder of The Muslim Women’s Organisation.
Suzy Shaw: Founder of a business that supports people to increase their confidence, improve their life, help them into employment.
Teresa Cullen: Co-founder and Chief Executive of Young Potential.
Tracie Linehann: Principal of Scope’s Rutland House School & Services in Mapperley, Nottingham.
Valerie Howe: Teacher of rich tasks & food tech at Djanogly City Academy and active member of the church and community
Wendy Radford: Set up Cedar Wildlife Sanctuary in her garden 21 years ago which now takes in around 1,000 animals per year
Yvonne Craven-Griffiths: EAL teacher at Djanogly City Academy
The organisers also presented a posthumous award to Tracie Eagles, who received a number of nominations but passed away suddenly in January this year. Tracie Eagles worked at Design Factory, where she supported designers, makers and businesses, and is missed by many.
